To what degree does the impact and ethical responsibility of organizations extend to and include human rights? Who is responsible for ethical thinking and acting in organizations? What does ethical thinking and acting entail in practice from a Business of Human Rights (BHR) perspective? How might we analyze complex ethical dilemmas in organizations as matters of human rights?
Traditional rational approaches to business ethics have proved insufficient in addressing grand challenges, such as ecological destruction, climate change, inequalities, human rights violations, exploitative work practices and negative impacts on our planet. The present course problematizes traditional approaches to business ethics and introduces newer theoretical perspectives on ethics in MOS that are relevant from a BHR perspective. In so doing, the course invites participants to reimagine business ethics from the perspective of human, and increasingly also nonhuman, rights.
Learning goals:
After completing the course, students will be better able to:
- independently discuss central theories on ethics in MOS (Management and Organization Studies) that are relevant from a Business of Human Rights (BHR) perspective
- identify BHR-related ethical dilemmas in organizational practices
- independently apply theories on ethics to analyze real-life practices and solve BHR-related problems
