Post doctoral researcher Andreas Lundell and PhD student Axel Nyberg participated in the 10th International Conference on Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Operations Research Techniques in Constraint Programming (CPAIOR) organized at IBM Research in Yorktown Heights, New York, USA, 18-22 May 2013. Plenary speakers included Ralph Gomory, one of the most known researchers in integer programming.

Professor Göran Högnäs is the leader of a research project about Markov processes titled “Markovprocesser: Teori i användning” (in Swedish) that was one of the large research grants (130.000 EUR) awarded to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Magnus Ehrnrooth Foundation in 2013.

Aided by one-hundred year old weather maps and his knowledge in optimization, PhD student Mikael Nyberg won a leg in one of the world’s largest virtual regattas, Volvo Ocean Race Game, with over 178 000 registered boats and about 90 000 participants. Nyberg was awarded a trip to Auckland, New Zeeland to visit the real Volvo Ocean Race when it visited the city.

Andreas Anckar became the newest member of the OSE group when he was accepted as a PhD student starting from January 2012. His thesis is done at the Department of Mathematics under the supervision of professor Göran Högnäs. The title of the research is “The Hausdorff Dimension of Invariant Measures for Iterated Function Systems”.

PhD student Anders Skjäl was invited to visit Professor Christodoulos Floudas’ research group in Princeton University, USA, for the period 28.3–8.4 2011. Professor Floudas is a member of the International Scientific Panel of the OSE group and was the plenary speaker at the annual OSE seminar in 2010. As a result of the research visit, progress has been made on a nondiagonal version of the aBB underestimator for nonconvex optimization.
