SPREMI, 14 November 2024: Liz Marsden

Dr. Liz Marsden, postdoctoral researcher the English Department, will give a talk on reflections and findings from her 3-year postdoc at the university. Liz will be leaving our university at the end of this month, so this is the final opportunity to hear her talk about the newest in digital pragmatics. Her talk is titled “Digital Discourse and Online Community Building: Reflections and Findings from my 3-year Postdoc”.

Doctoral Defence, Tuesday 12 November 2024: Aleksandra Ianchenko

M.A. Aleksandra Ianchenko (COTUTELLE) will publicly defend her doctoral thesis in English Language and Literature with a thesis entitled Estranging Trams: Atmospheres of Trams In Art.

Professor Peter Adey, Royal Holloway, University of London, United Kingdom, and Professor Annette Arlander, The University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki), Finland, will serve as opponents and Professor Jason Finch, Åbo Akademi University, as custos.

The defence will start at 10:00 and lasts approximately fours hours, taking place on campus at Tallinn University in Tallinn, Estonia, room M648. You can also attend the defence in Helikon (A202), Arken (Fabriksgatan 2, 20500 Åbo) where the defence is streamed via Zoom, or by connecting directly to the Zoom through the link provided below.

Book Publication, Thursday 10 October 2024: Gill, Malmivirta, Wårvik

Everyone is welcome to attend the special event that takes place in Smedjan (M227), Arken, on Thursday 10 October 2024 at 15.00-17.00.

The English Department at Åbo Akademi has a long tradition of research in text and discourse linguistics and pragmatics, and many of our members of staff have published in this field. To mark one item in this tradition we are organizing a book publication event to present the volume Structures in Discourse: Interaction, Adaptability, and Pragmatic Functions, edited by Martin Gill, Aino Malmivirta, and Brita Wårvik (John Benjamins, 2024).

Our guest of honour at this event will be Tuija Virtanen-Ulfhielm, Professor Emerita of English Linguistics, whose work has been a major influence on the field, and to whom this collection of papers is dedicated.

Come and hear about the volume, the process that resulted in the publication, and its background in the linguistic research at the Department.

Refreshments will be served.

PREMIS, Thursday 19 September 2024: Maxwell Woods

Welcome to the year’s first PREMIS on 19 September in Panorama (B301, Arken) at 15.15-17.00. Dr. Maxwell Woods from the Adolfo Ibáñez University, Chile, will present the latest in his research on global literary urban studies and comparative literature. The talk is titled “(Post)Colonial Interactions: Ireland and Indigenous Latin America”.

The PREMIS exceptionally takes place on a Thursday due to Dr. Wood’s tight schedule, but also because of the linguistic elements of the talk.

Teaching Demonstration, Tuesday 17 September 2024: Maxwell Woods

All are welcome to partake in the teaching demonstration given by Dr. Maxwell Woods titled “Taking English Literatures Global”. The demonstration takes place in Källan (C201, Arken) on Tuesday 17 September at 14.30-15.15.

Dr. Woods is assistant professor in the Department of Literature at the Adolfo Ibáñez University in Viña del Mar, Chile, and he is applying for the title of Docent from Åbo Akademi University. His work is situated in the fields of global literary urban studies and comparative literature.

Lieselotte Anderwald, professor of English linguistics at the University of Kiel, Germany, will give a talk on the process of “non-standardization” and stigmatization of ain’t from a historical perspective. The title of the talk is “Non-standardization: On the historical enregisterment of ain’t in 19th century American newspapers.”
