Resisting Racism: Why Do “We” Hate?

The first annual seminar organised by the students of the programme in 2019.

Speakers:

Monica Gathuo, who is Co-Coordinator of the Anti-Racism Media Activist Alliance (ARMA), a project funded by the Kone Foundation of Finland. Main focus of ARMA is the Research and Activism Collaboration for Creative Uses of Digital Media, Pedagogy and Arts against Racism in Finland. They are interested in researching and collaborating with media initiatives by people who suffer from racism that directly or indirectly contribute to denouncing, challenging, mobilizing and acting against racism and its consequences in Finland and in Brazil.
Monica Gathuo herself has specified in communication and media studies (Bachelor’s degree) and in global politics and communication (Master’s degree).More information:

Amiirah Salleh-Hoddin is a member of the Anti-Racist Forum (ARF) of Finland. She is the Co-founder & Chair of the Anti-Racist-Forum and PhD candidate at the center for ethnic relations and nationalism at University of Helsinki. Her project is called: “Intersectional Border Struggles and Disobedient Knowledge in Activism”.
2018 she won the global peace education award.

Sheikh is a board member of the Anti-Racist Forum, which is small poc-led organisation aiming towards transforming anti-racist field in Finland. Sheikh is also member of the national youth organisation and works in the board of local section, Tampereen Vasemmistonuoret. He is currently working as an educator against hate speech in youth work in Rauhankasvatusinstituutti (RKI; Finnish Peace Education Institute).
Gavan Titley, a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at Maynooth University and docent in Media and Communication at the Swedish School of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki. In his research, he focuses on politics of race, racism and multiculturism in European politics. Through his Media Studies approach, he also studies freedom of speech/ ‘hate speech’ in the digital world.
